Title: GPS
Hi Everyone,
I do some at home work for a client but also onsite, more and more. He is very busy just now so he has asked me to travel around the New England states for 2 weeks to do some research for him. I will be in a lot of different cities and smaller towns and I really feel the need for a GPS. I have checked and it seems that Garmin Nuvi 350 is one of the better ones to get. I really need a crash course in this and would like to know anyone's opinion. I would also like to keep expenses down. $200.00 would be optimal for a good one but I see TigerDirect.ca has one that, including shipping and taxes, would be about $264. which is doable. Anything for that or less would be good for meeeee
Thanks, Jo

Title: Express Scribe does not work with my foot pedal
I have an Infinity IN-USB-1 foot pedal that I got about five years ago when I was taking a medical transcription course. I never have used it because I went into another field of work at that time out of necessity. Now I want to get back to doing transcription from home as I now have six years of legal transcription experience in a professional office setting.
I have downloaded Express Scribe and followed the instructions it has in the software for setting up the foot pedal. However, the pedal does not work with the software.
I converted an MP3 file to a wav file with some software I downloaded to try to see if the pedal would work without having to purchase new equipment. Maybe it is the file and not the software and foot pedal.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Title: Satellite Internet
Hello All,
I've just discovered that there may be a possibility that I will be moving into an area that does not have high-speed internet capabilities. Obviously, dial-up just won't cut it, so I'm wondering if anyone out there has ever used satellite internet, or known someone who has used it, and what their experiences have been.
Thanks! |

Title: emails as billable hours?
I was wondering how many of you charge your clients for time you spend emailing them or with them on the phone. I don't charge for either as I don't have much work and am not worried about "wasting" hours on something for free. This is something I have wondered about as I think about the future of my business and how things will change.
Thanks! Valerie

Title: Lost in a sea of opportunity
Hello all!
I'm an experienced admin who'd love to work from home. After doing a little google research, I noticed that there's a wide variety of organizations and training courses available. So I wanted to ask the forum, what organizations are you members of? How has this benefited you? What courses have you taken? How have they benefited you?
I know this is a newbie question, but any advice would be greatly appreciated. |

Title: Just sent my first ever rate increase to a client!
I had a client whose contract was up for renewal. He was way lower than any of my new clients and I really needed to have a rate increase with him. So I sent him a new contract and a nice little letter. Now I'm all a bundle of nerves to see what his reaction is!

Title: Ready to Strangle Each Other
Our tree service business has now exceeded our expectations-and I'm yelping for help. What my kids were once able to do, now needs to be replaced by an HR person. I can't do it all!!
Yet, I CAN NOT give up the VA work I do-I love that satisfaction...but it's taking my focus away from my family business.
WHAT do I do? When I was starting up my own biz, I had a lot of down time...but I can't quit on them (my clients) now. I know their business like I know my own, but mine needs some attention-the type of attention that I don't like. HR, filing....ugh. Any advise, because I love doing both. I'm just sick of not being able to take a holiday cuz it will set me back in payroll, etc., or client needs. |

Title: What is a fair offer to buy a Domain from someone?
I have decided to make an offer to the people that own a domain I want. The only think on it is one of those generic "search" type place holder sites. They own the name until about this time next year. I have no idea what kind of offer to make. I was actually thinking of offering say $50 but while I don't want to sound like a complete rube I don't really have alot of extra $$$ to be spending either.

This forum gives me a sense of belonging,
camaraderie, choice and respect. In a word “grounding”.
I don’t feel so isolated when I log into the VAnetworking because
I feel like we’re in this huge office building; but on
different floors, or another part of the building working for
different departments within the same industry; maybe just down
the hall, and we instant message or email each other for peer
support, tech support, to catch up, get advice, etc. Everyone’s
personality comes through on this forum, even from the quiet
observers – as they do in brick and mortar businesses.
Some really talkative on some days and not so much on another
day. We have our “tech and semi-tech” people, our
“hostess, proper, professional, fun-loving, and counselor”
personalities, “VA veterans”, “newbies”,
etc. It’s an absolutely amazing mix, and the best part
of this forum, unlike in a brick and mortar business is the
freedom to choose what topics you want to contribute to, or
participate in without any pressures or the typical office politics
that I’m sure contributed (in some degree) to what lead
us all to pursue our own businesses. -
