Oprah,
like you, I had to work very hard for my success. And the journey has
humbled me greatly. In 1996 I suddenly found myself a single mom of
3 young children. I was 3,000 miles away from friends and family and
had no emotional support. Worse, I had no job. And it had been years
since I worked in my profession as a legal secretary. If I was going
to be able to feed and shelter my children—to be able to care
for them as the mother they had always relied on—I had to think
and act quickly.
Drawing on my administrative background, I decided that offering my skills virtually may be the answer.
Turns out it was more than the answer. Choosing to become a Virtual Assistant led me through a series of choices that created the incredible lifestyle—and income—I, along with my family, enjoy today here in beautiful White Rock, British Columbia.
The only hard part of being a VA is lack of “water cooler” time. You know, the bits of conversation throughout the day with friends and colleagues whom you can relate to, both professionally and personally. Sometimes you just want to talk shop. And other times (often times!) you really wish there was someone you could chat with about the trials and tribulations of being a working Mom. Not to mention I really had no one to mentor me or even bounce ideas off of.
Hence the startup of the Virtual Assistant Networking Association in 2003. This was my way of filling the void I knew other VAs like me were experiencing. It also just felt good to reach out to other working mothers worldwide and give them hope, advice, a dream, critical business information I wish I’d had when I started, and most of all, companionship. Now I wake up every morning eager to keep giving back to the industry that has given me so much.
I have a 6 month waiting list of hopefuls waiting to get “client” status. Oprah, you don't have to wait, not just because you’re “Oprah Winfrey” either. But because you are the woman who can show women from all walks of life the possibilities that lie within them. Virtual Assistance is here to stay. Isn’t it time we let the world know?
The media is catching on to all things virtual, but Virtual Assistants in particular are drawing more and more attention from the big guns. In fact, Tawnya has been asked to advise various media reps about Virtual Assistance and what this exciting new career choice entails.
So, Tawnya set up The Media's Virtual Assistant Survey ~ The Who, What, When, Where, Why and How. Here, media organizations can learn valuable and interesting statistics and facts about Virtual Assistants.
Although Virtual Assistants have been around for over 10 years, the advent of the Internet and the specialized services that VAs bring to their clients have made corporate America sit up and take notice. Virtual Assistance are entering the mainstream! Media attention includes:
Recently at VAnetworking, we asked some Virtual Assistants and their clients what they would love to tell Oprah about virtual assistance to help the public know more about this exciting and new career.
